July 14, 1965 - Remarking on the death of Adlai Stevenson, President Johnson said today: “America has lost its most eloquent spirit, its finest voice. The world of freedom and human dignity has lost its most articulate champion.”
In a statement on nationwide T.V. and radio, Johnson paid tribute to the late U.N. Ambassador as one of the great Americans of all time, likening him in many ways to Abraham Lincoln.
He announced that Vice President Humphrey will lead a special presidential delegation to London to bring back Stevenson’s body.
