July 29, 1965 - President Johnson had unanimous backing today for his actions in Vietnam from the nation’s governors after giving them a White House briefing similar to those given earlier to congressional leaders.
Republicans George Romney of Michigan and Mark Hatfield of Oregon — who voted “no” yesterday at the National Governors Conference on a resolution giving blanket support to the President’s Vietnam policies — withdrew their reservations after the briefing
Romney gave his full support to the President, and Hatfield kept only a slight reservation: he wanted to see how Johnson “followed through” on his efforts to use the U.N. peace-keeping machinery to end the war.
Johnson was greatly pleased with the governors’ response to the briefing.
“It couldn’t have gone better,” he told reporters afterward. “There was a fine degree of unity and understanding among all of us.”
Governor Nelson Rockefeller (R-N.Y.) said the information given the governors was “very constructive, very lucid.”
