Would You Live in Penang? | Malaysia's Best City for Expats 🇲🇾

We spent the day walking around Penang, Malaysia — no plan, just seeing where the streets took us. Along the way, we talked about whether this is somewhere we’d actually want to live as expats.

We started in Little India, which was easily one of the highlights. The smells of spices and incense hit you right away. It’s a vibrant area full of fabric shops, Indian restaurants, street stalls, and Hindu temples. A real cultural mix that shows off Penang’s diversity.

After that, we visited the Chew Jetty — one of the oldest Chinese settlements in George Town, built entirely on stilts. It’s interesting, but it definitely felt more touristy than local. A short walk away, though, down the side streets and alleys, the atmosphere completely changed — quiet, authentic, and full of character. That’s where Penang really started to feel like somewhere you could live.

We ended the day at the New World Food Court, hoping for a good meal, but most of the stalls were closed, and the food that was available was overpriced and not great. Still, the walk itself made it worth it — Penang is full of charm, layered history, and daily life that’s easy to appreciate just by walking around.
