In the history of World War II, 1940 was a year of dramatic changes. In the beginning, people watched and waited to see what Adolf Hitler would do next, but for the Allies, when the Führer deployed his blitzkrieg tactics across Europe and swallowed the Low Countries and France into his ever-expanding Nazi empire, it was too late to stop him. Subsequently, Hitler turned his attention to Great Britain, and as summer turned into autumn, the island nation had to literally fight for its survival. While everyone looked to the sky, the Battle of Britain raged above them until Hitler was ultimately forced to face defeat, with London bearing the heaviest burden of his rage. The blitz ruthlessly bombed London night after night, subjected to the mercy of Hermann Göring's Luftwaffe. But the spirit of Great Britain, now under Prime Minister Winston Churchill, never wavered. As autumn gave way to winter, as you will discover in "Fighting Further Afield," the British not only held their ground at home but also soon made progress in North Africa. While Hitler's Italian ally Benito Mussolini pushed his troops into Egypt, it was the Axis powers who suddenly discovered they had a fight on their hands.
