Gahanna, OH - A man with a knife threatening others was charged after being shot by an officer in Gahanna, officials say.

The Gahanna Division of Police said officers went to the 300 block of Lincolnshire Road, a residential neighborhood between Agler and McCutcheon, on the report of a suicidal individual.

The man, 19-year-old Makhi McMillan, was reportedly suicidal and threatening relatives. McMillan can be heard on body camera video threatening to kill a relative.

Officers gave repeated commands for McMillan to put the knife down before firing. The video is heavily blurred, but Police Chief Jeffrey Spence showed a photo of the knife McMillan was holding.

"Despite repeated commands to drop the knife and comply with orders, the individual refused," Brian Toth said, Executive Vice President of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #9. "Sadly, he made a choice to not surrender peacefully."

"Over one dozen commands to drop the weapon were announced by our officers as McMillan was inches away from a potential victim," said Chief Spence. "When he refused, an officer fired a service weapon, striking McMillan."

The Bureau of Criminal Investigations is assisting with the investigation. Officials did not say how many shots were fired.

Police began administering aid until medics arrived. McMillan was taken to a hospital in serious condition. No one else was injured.
