Welcome to album review Tuesdays here on the channel and tonight I have a very special treat for you guys and this one has been a long time coming and this one is another subscriber request and tonight we are going deep into the underground once again with Lurker Of Chalice-Tellurian Slaked Furnace. Released in 2020 on Nuclear War Now Productions. I got the die-hard edition with the leather faux case, A2 poster, A2 gatefold jacket, A faux leather back patch and deep blood red double vinyl!

Lurker Of Chalice was formed in 2001 and was created due to the passing of his longtime girlfriend at the time having been diagnosed with brain cancer and ultimately committing suicide among other things im sure that led to the creation of this project. IN 2001 and 2002 he released 2 demos both had the name L.O.C and Lurker Of Chalice self titled.
In 2005 however a more cohesive and consistent effort was released initially under Total Holocaust Records simply titled LURKER OF CHALICE which I also own and you can check out the review of it in the metal reviews playlist.

Alright so now that you know some history of the project lets get into reviewing the monolith that is “Tellurian Slaked Furnace” Now the first thing I will get out of the way is that this is NOT a new album, though wrest re-crafted and compiled it into something a lot more album like, what we have here is a compilation of a lot of unheard and unreleased material from the first 2 demos that were released in a single record store in san Francisco and limited to just 50 copies each, resulting in a lot of this material never being exposed to the public.

Another thing to note here is that this is an entirely eponymous album and none of the tracks are named at all and instead we get a track listing of roman numerals from I-XII and therefore giving you a track by track breakdown simply just isn’t possible because of how cohesive and juxtaposing this compilation really is. What Tellurian Slaked Furnace is in its entirety, is an experience and what we have here musically is a very bleak contemplative experience but also very disorienting and both deeply personal but detached, cinematic and mysterious.

Deeply haunting excursions of dark shifting ambience and agony crash and cascade amongst very power percussive accents that lead into Labyrinth excursions of both terror and bleak solitary melancholy and pain.

Disconsolate reckoning of the self and the deep longing for the absence of others is omni present within the walls of this agonizing chamber of wailing grief and hatred. However one thing to also note here is that this is almost entirely instrumental and thus to describe the “vocal work” is almost un-necessary but there is one hostile appearance of his seething hostility that are present on the second track and theyre extremely haunting and terrifying.

Beautiful acoustic melodies mix with bleak dark soundscapes drenched in melancholic ambience and “heavy riffs” rarely ever emerge but they don’t really have to because the fact that this compilation doesn’t trap itself within the “Black Metal” framework makes it just that much more compelling and deep.
