❗ The island's highest point, Mount Le Morne, has become a symbol of freedom and rebellion since slavery was abolished on the island in 1835.
On that day, several runaway slaves were hiding on Le Morne Mountain, fleeing justice. The government sent soldiers to tell them the good news. However, the slaves, thinking that the soldiers climbing the slope were coming to shoot them, jumped off the cliff... The Slave Route memorial monument was erected in memory of the events of those years.
