I just don't get why so many people today refuse to confront the harsh reality that slavery was, in fact, legal. It was lawful to own a slave, and that's a painful truth. Similarly, in Nazi Germany, it was legal for authorities, judges, lawyers, and even medical professionals to perpetrate eugenics, which led to the unthinkable killing of innocent children, the elderly, and countless others. Their ideologically driven thinking made them comfortable with such atrocities.

What's even more disturbing is that it was illegal for anyone to speak out against these injustices, to point out the irrationality and cruelty of such actions. That's the thing about freedom - it's often illegal, which is why people have to fight and sometimes die for it. The price of freedom is steep, especially for those who are ideologically trapped and need someone to show them the way out.
