Happy Gilmore (1996) Discussion

What happens when you cross a hockey player with the prestigious sport known as Golf, a movie known as HAPPY GILMORE. This was the movie that put Adam Sandler on the map and started a string of successful comedies for the former SNL player that continues to this day.

HAPPY GILMORE was not the first Adam Sandler movie as BILLY MADISON was released prior and another movie called GOING OVERBOARD that Sandler disowned for being extremely terrible.

HAPPY GILMORE is best remembered as the Golf movie where Adam Sandler has fits of rage when the sport doesn’t go in his favor and violently attacks anyone who dares pisses him off.

Sandler would go on to use that type of character in various of his movies to some degree. In HAPPY GILMORE, SAndler must win back his Grandmas House from the IRS then from Shooter McGavin who plans to turn Happy’s old room into his trophy room or piss on the ashes if he dares lay a finger on him.

Supporting Gilmore is golf mentor Chubs play by the late Carl Weathers, Virgina Venit the PGA executive in charge of making sure Happy behaves, his beloved Grandma, and Bond Villian Jaws aka Richard Kiel. Happy finds the strength and skill to put Shooter Mcgavin in his place.

Happy Gilmore’s greatest act of horrendous violence happens during a Celebrity tournament where he is paired with game show host Bob Barker. When a goon hired by McGavin distracts Happy, he decides to take out his anger on Bob Barker unknown to Happy is a trained martial artist with a black belt. Happy’s ass kicking is the highlight of the movie and something of a Karma check for the previous people he raged fight prior.
