So lets get into the review now shall we? Opening this trip into dark insane hell driven madness we have the ambient passage called “Nocturnal Obesiance” and there is a cold howl of wind echoing forth overtop of some dark keyboard work and it immediately sets the tone for this albums sonic attack on your soul and its quite the intriguing intro

Next up is “massacre” and this is just full on black metal brutality with such an astoundingly cold production that sends chills down your spine and makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up. The riffs are savage cold and visceral, the bass thunders underneath it with the pounding insane blast beats combining to make this an absolute brutal cold black metal assault on all your senses. Truly remarkable and theres an amazing solo on here as well that doesn’t last long but its very effective and profound even for its short duration. This is a track hellbent on a total fucking massacre. Quorthons vocals are so cold and inhuman that it will literally scare the shit out of you if you aren’t used to black metal and that’s exactly what it sounds like. This is one of the best openers on a black metal album I’ve ever heard, Killer track!

Next up is “Woman Of Dark Desires” and we get an instant skull bashing double bass attack with some great blast work on the snare combined with cold sinister riffing and it sounds like pure darkness and despair but also evil and forbidden because the riffs, drums and bass along with quorthons vocals literally portray an evil succubus that wants to eat the souls of man and the atmosphere that this song brings forth instantly makes you think of those visions and feel the emotions of helplessness and seduction and it works so godamned well that any band that came after this that tried to write about lust and perversion? Just fucking failed miserably. Bathory just knew how to pioneer so many different sounds, ideas, themes and concepts and make it sound so real and authentic. Killer song here as well.

Next up we have one of my favorites on the album with “Call From The Grave” and this one slows things down a bit with a mid tempo pace but it certainly isn’t any less dark and sinister. In fact I would say that it’s more sinister because of its slower pacing it creates an atmosphere full of thick dense fog and ancient cemeteries under a cold moonlit sky with the dead rising from their slumber and hungering for flesh. However the song is all about Quorthons obsession with Death and longing to experience it. The riffs here are so cold and lifeless that they will rob you of all hope and light and leave nothing but darkness, and lifelessness inside of your soul and it shreds you into pieces with so much atmosphere and hypnotizing riffs that it completely mesmerizes you and envelopes you in its every passing moment.

The Vocals are so fucking full of anguish and hatred I don’t know how anyone could ever doubt quorthon’s passion for creating the darkest music ever known to man. Yes there have been successors to Bathory in black metal when it comes to darkness and bleak emotional landscapes but very few can compare to this. I mean fuck this is 1987 guys and I don’t care what anyone says.. this is easily the most extreme metal album of the 80s for so many godamned reasons. Did I mention the incredible chilling lead guitar solo on this song as well that sends so much terror and blackness down your spine that it blows the fucking mind? Well there I just did! One of my favorites on the album right here guys!
