Now for those of you who don’t know Grave are an old school Swedish death metal band from Stockholm and formed back in 1988. Now technically the band formed in 1984 as Rising Power however they went through many name changes until settling on “Grave” in 1988.
The line-up on the “Into The Grave” album consists of the following
►Ola Guitars, Vocals
►Jörgen Guitars, Vocals (lead)
►Jensa Drums
►Jonas Bass
Alright so lets get into the review shall we?
So the album opens up with “Deformed” and we are immediately belted with pounding drums and savage low tuned aggressive guitar work and some really sick savage putrid bass. The vocals from Jorgen are astounding here as well and theyre guttural but not to the point where they become indecipherable! The production on this album is perfect as well. Its dirty, putrid vile, disgusting and muddy the way death metal should be. The emotions and visceral violence of this brutal groovy track convey a deep fascination with deformity and depravity and that’s exactly what the tracks deep bone saw cutting guitar work, drums and bass convey along with those disgusting putrid vocals. This is a killer fucking opener guys!
Next is “In Love” and this one is a brutal death metal assault as well. Low tuned madness steeped in depravity and lust for a corpse. Which is pretty disgusting and vile and that’s the sound that emits from your speakers on this track. This is some really brutal death metal but also has no lack of groove and hooks that keep the music from ever getting boring and repetitive and this is one of the things I love about OSDM. It’s not about being as fast and brutal as possible, its about being real and delivering emotions and compositions of disgusting putrid vile rage and in this tracks case? Being obsessed and in love with a corpse and that’s the visions and sounds that are being conveyed on this track and its another killer track here from Grave!
Guitar solos do make their appearance here and there on this album but they are never over done and they don’t feel out of place at all! After all this isn’t about technicality or “skill” this is meat and potatoes straight death metal the way it fucking should be!
Next up we have “For Your God” and the intensity and violence doesn’t slow done one iota on this track instead we continue on with the saw digging into the flesh with the brutality cranked to 11 on this fucking song and the guttural vocals and bass pummel your skull and the blast beats on this fucking song certainly emphasize the visceral violence on this song as well. Now for some people this album might get repetitive really quickly as the songs definitely follow a similar formula throughout the record.
However what this accomplishes is a consistency throughout that paints visions and expresses emotions of the most vile and depraved extreme acts that death metal embrace and Grave is certainly no different. One thing ill also note here is the immense amount of groove driven death metal riffs and double bass drumming that are all over this album and it makes for some rampant head banging inducing sessions throughout as well! Killer song here as well!
Next up we have “Obscure Infinity” and this one kind of slows things down a bit and offers up a slower groovy death metal approach and we get a mid tempo opening before it breaks into a full on death metal assault of violence and pain. The double bass on this song is absolutely sick and pounds away like a jackhammer on all of your senses. The guitar and bass here also rip the flesh from your fucking bones in a way that only OSDM can and its an absolute marvel to behold. I also think Grave doesn’t get nearly enough credit in the metal community as I rarely hear anyone talking about this band! This track definitely conjures up visions and emotions of a void of obscure nothingness and a black empty grave buried beneath the earth! This is a killer track as well!
