Yes my friends tonight we are diving into Lurker Of Chalice. This is his self titled release and was put out in 2005. Lurker of Chalice is another project from Wrest who is also the man behind Leviathan and if you know anything about Leviathan’s art then you will have an idea how Lurker Of Chalice might sound.

However I urge you to put aside those reservations because Leviathan is a different beast than Lurker. Lurker of chalice was created out of an extremely traumatic personal loss that Jef suffered which occurred in 2006 when his longtime girlfriend Jessie was diagnosed with brain cancer. After a year of excruciating pain she commited suicide. Obviously Jeff then tried to take his own life but survived.

This album is an amalgam of many layered elements of emotions and experiences and it really adheres itself to your mind as you go through all of its various corridors of despondency and pain. Now the album opens with a really great intro track with some cool tom work and a pretty ominous guitar riff being repeated over and over as the drumming builds into some ambient overtures playing in the background on the keyboards. This intro really sets the tone for the rest of the album and it’s a cool intro track

Next up is Piercing where they might and the opening riff is a clean somber melancholic clean passage that sets the tone for this journey into the psychosis and depression that Jef is expressing here there's also some crows cawing in the background lightly as the passage continues into a full blown cacophonic build of intense swirling chaos as the guitar riffs literally sound like a void of nothingness humming and pitch shifting like its beckoning you to enter into it. Literally these “riffs” are more like emotional panic stricken thoughts as they pierce where they might, see what I did there? Because that’s what this track reminds me of.

The blasting drum work isn’t there so much to make the song “heavy” as it is to induce intense states of anxiety and a hypnotic spell driven black atmosphere that gazes into the abysmal mind of wrest as the riffs continue to cut deep into your flesh from the pain and anguish wrests desperate howls and snarls of vile hatred and pain spew forth from his mouth letting you know that there is no fucking hope.

The track ends with an almost neo folk gallant ride driven passage of militant drum work with rest chanting in the background as if some sort of victory has just taken place, or perhaps its signifying the descent into complete madness? This track definitely conjures up a very wide range of thoughts and emotions and ill leave it to you to decide for yourself as im only explaining my experiences here and what the album does to me. This is a killer opening track!

Next is Specter as Valkyrie is and it opens with a frantic array of drum work and black/doom metal guitar riffing before it builds into its slower more dark ambient sway into a grey fog of sadness and desperation that sounds like a long journey over a barren wasteland of emotions and shattered memories and desolate stabs of truth echoing across every waking moment of your being. Wrests vocals sound like they're coming out of some black hole covered in reverb with a low growling snarl full of pain and a lifeless agony that has no end in sight.

There is a deep sense of intense depression and cuts of complete isolation as desperate lifeless vocal passages crawl through this thick drenched fog of blackness and work their way up your spine and the track really makes feel immersed in its cold lifeless world of wrests mind. This is another amazing emotional passage of some of the darkest emotions I've experienced on an album. The last 4 mins of the song reminds me of the final climax towards the next descent further into the abyss that this record is. This is an amazing song as well!

Next up is the Doom laden trip into black hell that is “Minions” and this one sounds like your plummeting deeper into the abyss of black thick despair that wrest is taking you on throughout this experience and after all that’s what this is. I wouldn’t call this “music” in the traditional sense of the word because what we have here is something far more complex and deep. This is the audial portrayal of someone's complete and utter mental breakdown from the resulting trauma I alluded to earlier.
