Welcome to album review Tuesdays here on the channel. Tonight we are going to Bergen Norway to talk about what is considered to be one of the most quintessential black metal albums of all time with Burzum-Filsofem. Filosofem was originally released in 1996 on Misanthropy records and has seen many repressings. The edition I have was released in 2010 on Bylobog Productions.

Now, im sure at this point Burzum needs absolutely no introduction. If you are at least vaguely familiar with Norwegian black metal then im sure you know about varg vikernes and the controversy and his imprisonment for arson and murder. Now does any of this matter when it comes to the quality of Varg’s music? No it simply does not. Furthermore Varg was among the first to have the “Go it alone” approach and create a new style of one man black metal along with acts like Strid and Bethlehem.

Granted both of the aforementioned acts do have multiple members? I do feel like Burzum, Strid, and Bethelhem all helped to pioneer the misanthropic depressive side of black metal as each of these bands has a deep sense of contemplation and despair throughout their beautiful fragility and overall compositional song structuring. The atmosphere of these bands is undeniable and brought a completely new side to black metal and pushed it back further from traditional norms and really helped to firmly establish itself as a definitive sub genre of black metal! So with that lets get into the review shall we?

So this masterpiece opens with probably one of the most iconic black metal songs of all time with Dunkelheit which translated means darkness. Varg also made an official music videos for this track which you can see playing behind me right now. This absolute cold masterpiece of ambient bm fragility opens with one of the most incredibly done chilling riffs of all time as it begins to completely envelope you in its atmosphere.

Simply keyboard melodies emphasize the journey this track takes you on with simple hypnotic brilliant cold guitar work and primitive drumming. This is what black metal is supposed to sound like ladies and gentleman. Raw, primitive, stripped back and atmospheric. The atmosphere on this track is astounding and makes me feel like im walking through a forest at night completely alone and under the cold moonlit sky with only nature surrounding me as I feel its embrace as this music takes you deep into soundscapes of intense emotional compositional transcendence and darkness. This is a fucking incredible opening track!

Next up we have The Death Of Jesus and this one follows this atmosphere even further with a deep double bass driven ride that makes you feel like your riding on the clouds high on Sleipnir who if you don’t know was Odins 8 legged horse. The atmosphere is so fucking enchanting and fragile that it feels like it could all collapse at any given moment. The deep bass hums throughout the track help to give it that deep contemplation and mystery that only burzum can provide and this track just hypnotizes you into its dark epic soundscapes of cold mountains and blizzarding winds of emotion and contemplation. This is one of the most hypnotic black metal tracks ever recorded and its an absolute masterpiece. The riffs convey deep emotional states of solitude and Strength, Is this a DSBM album? Well in some ways yes … because this album certainly captured the depressive aspects of black metal and really took them to new heights and Jesus is dead is definitely one hell of a dark fucking track! Extremely hypnotizing and captivating. Killer fucking track!

Next up we have the slower paced Behold The Daughters of the Firmament and again a slow crawl of complete ambient depressive black metal brilliance with some deep soundscapes of cold black despair and emotions that echo through the chamber walls of its cavernous wails from varg as well… Simple drumming once again and really hypnotic spellbinding riffs make this atmospheric track brilliant as hell.. This atmosphere is all about returning to the lands of the old and free before civilization and that’s exactly what the riffing, drumming , bass and vocals make you feel on this track. It is dark and fragile but also strong and powerful simultaneously. Deeply enchanting and hypnotic and cold as hell however this is definitely a song that will envelope you into its dark cold atmospheric soundscapes and repetitive riffs couple together to embrace you and pull you into the music which is absolutely beautiful. This is an amazing track here as well ladies and gentleman! So lets check out a bit of this track here on music of destruction…… and we are back guys!
