Alright so tonights review is of a classic dating all the way back to 1994 with Mayhem Live In Leipzig which was initially released in 93 on vinyl but later came to cd in 94 on avant-garde music! The album itself was recorded in Leipzig Germany in 1990!

Now, the line-up on this album consists of
Per “Dead”Ohlin on vocals
Ooystein “Euronymous” Aarseth on guitars
Necrobutcher on bass
Hellhammer on drums

So the album opens with “Deathcrush” and the live version to me sounds so much more cold and raw than the studio version as well as a lot more primitive and atmospheric. The guitars are literally flesh ripping. Hellhammers drumming is so fucking primal that it sounds incredibly ritualistic and ancient. Dead’s vocals are bone chilling and sound like theyre coming from a demented psychopath on the verge of fragility and psychosis. Its absolutely perfect.

Necrobutcher’s bass tones are so godamned incredible on this album too and I love the pedals he uses all over this masterpiece. This is pure raw black metal insanity. Excellent opener to this album!

Next up we have “Necrolust” and this version is one of my favorites Mayhem have ever made. I know they have done this song on other live recordings. But again this version sounds even better than the studio version by leaps and bounds. This raw live production just makes Mayhem’s music sound so primal and raw that its mindblowing! Euronymous’ chainsaw buzzing guitar madness just makes your jaw hit the fucking floor. Hellhammer’s drumming on this track is absolute perfection as is necrobutchers bass.

Dead’s vocals here are just wretched and menacing as they have ever been and It’s a damn shame that he died when he did because he is one of the best black metal vocalists of all time if not the best.

Next up we have “Funeral Fog” which again sounds leaps and bounds better than the studio version because of this raw live production and this is how black metal is supposed to sound. Its super raw but not so raw that you cannot hear the instrumental prowess of all these incredible musicians. The track literally sounds like fog surrounding a cemetary with you standing right in the middle of it unable to grasp any sense of life at all. Bone chilling, raw and uncompromising black metal at its fucking best with this track!

Next up we have the legendary track and perhaps my favorite Mayhem song of all time “The Freezing Moon” and my god this version over the studio version with Atilla? Is beyond incredible.

Yes I love the studio version with atilla as I do own De Mysteris Dom Sathanas as well. But this version with the raw primal production and Deads vocals is beyond cold and misanthropic and of course it’s all about Dead’s obsession with dying and death and how perfect is that for Black Metal? In a lot of ways I think dead really did pioneer misanthropic black metal because his lyrics were all about death and hatred for mankind so while he may not have pioneered the musical style itself? He certainly pioneered the lyrical themes of the now widely established misanthropic black metal!

The guitars, bass, drumming and Deads performance all over Live in Leipzig are absolutely jaw dropping this version of The freezing moon is probably the best out of all of them in the entire discography including the studio version and their other live recordings! The guitars, bass, vocals, and drums are absolute perfection and will rip your skin right off your fucking bones from how godamned ice cold and atmospheric this is and the production makes it that much more bone chilling and dark.

Dead literally sounds like he is dying during his screams of death and torment and it really sends chills down your spine and makes the hair on the back of your fucking neck stand up! This is pure black metal bliss in my eyes ladies and gentleman!

Next up we have “Carnage” and that’s exactly what this one sounds like guys pure primal black metal savagery with nothing but ice cold venom and atmosphere coursing through the speakers that will leave you feeling like a headbanged trainwreck. This one will make is a fucking neckbreaker for sure and absolutely devastates everything like a steamroller made of ice that obliterates everything in its fucking path.
