Welcome to album review tuesdays here on the channel. I took a week off from making videos because I wanted to take a break. But hey im back now and tonights review is of an absolute black metal classic. Yes, we are taking a look at BURZUM-Det Som Engang Var which is norwegian for "what once was" this album was released in 1993 on Cymophane records.
So let's just get into the review now shall we? The album opens with a dark ambient track called "The Evil Coast" and it has a really dark and unsettling atmosphere about it that instantly takes me back to times of the old just like the album title says. This is a really impressive 2:20 insturmental opener and definitely something that varg should be proud of.
Next up we have "Key To The Gate" Which has a really primal ritualistic drum rythm and some savage primal aggressive riffing as well that gives you a sense of ancient ruins and frozen nordlands. Varg's shrill almost Pterodactyl like vocals really give this a unique atmosphere of desolation and cold darkness. The melancholic guitar riffing and cold vocals give this a really pain filled emotional composition and complexity that really reminds me of DSBM. However varg is not "DSBM" technically though the roots of DSBM are here because Varg's vocals are definitely very hate filled and sound like he is in pain and despair! This is a really fucking awesome song, and its one of the songs playing in the background for you guys right now! Killer track here!
Next up we have "A Ring To Rule" and this one continues on this journey into darkness and ancient times of old of course. One thing to keep in mind throughout this album is that Varg is a huge fan of RR. Tolkien who is the author of the massively popular Lord of the rings books. This song has a very epic atmosphere to it almost like a slow journey into the the cold world of the lord of the rings. But it carries it's own deep emotional significance as well with varg chanting along with his riffing all throughout the song which give this one a very dark and incredible atmosphere.
The riffing and drumming are so primitive and cold that it just takes you deep into its darkened world of ice and magical landscapes combined with vargs pain filled vocals. This is a track that i feel where varg is crying out for a world that he imagines to be much like this one that he is writing about on this album. This is another fucking killer song as well!
Next up is Lost Wisdom and again more of this darkened ice cold magical world where medieval times and the coldness of the norwegian environment are combined here to give this one a really intense atmosphere where you imagine absolutely no fucking sunlight and no summer days of bright light skies and beaches... No this is darkness, ice, snow, magical ancient landscapes untouched by the scum of humanity.
But this one is also a little bit faster in tempo and is very cold and dark sounding and isolated, yet the riffs are also conveying a sense of knowledge and "lost wisdom" so to speak and these are all elements that the vocals, drumming and guitar riffs emit and I personally absolutely love this track to death guys.
Next up we have the absolute breath taking ambient piece called "He Who Traveled" and thats exactly what kind of incredible dark atmosphere you get on this track from its incredible keyboard driven melodies and walls of desolate soundscapes. This one definitely sounds like someone travelling in an obscure darkened world with its incredible serenity and powerful emotional composition that this track brings forth. Awesome stuff here again as well!
