Welcome to album review tuesdays here on the channel I hope you have been enjoying this series so far. So todays review is of an obscure one man black metal project from Fort Wayne Indiana US with ECFERUS-Prehistory which was released on Feburary 10th 2015 on Fragile Branch Recordings. Prehistory comes in at just over 36 minutes in length and contains 4 tracks. The lineup consists of one called "ALP" who does all the insturments and vocals. So without further ado lets just get into the review shall we?

So the album opens with the track "Mitochondrial Eve" which has a really dark Piano/Keyboard like ambient passage which opens it into some really cosmic almost primordial riff driven black metal that starts out very mid tempo and almost melodic in ways and it explores many different soundscapes and passages that give you primordial emotions of ancient landscapes of snow and blizzards and ice that are completely uninhabited and the guitar riffing, vocals and drums illustrate these visions in their complexity with incredible precision and thought provocation. The vocals sound like they're coming from an ancient soul who's speaking from behind the elements of nature so to speak. It has a very unique combination of slower and fast tempos that give it a very chaotic atmosphere steeped in coldness, blackness and desolation. Perfect opening track

Next up is 'One Who First Make Fire" and it starts off which a nice sombre melodic clean guitar driven passage with the sound of crickets and frogs in the background that instantly take you into the night landscapes of isolation and peaceful serenity with some thunder and rain effects in the background and then it breaks into a double bass laden mid tempo raw black metal track, but not TOO raw. The atmospheric soundscapes on this one paint pictures of ancient civilizations discovering fire for the first time as well as "each other" as the music presents itself like an unfolding kindled flame of discovery and progress. Now, does this come close to being "Progressive black metal" No, absolutely not. What it does succeed in is what the artist intended upon with the creation of "Prehistory" and that is a primordial shift of awarness and emotion through the music and atmospheric textures being conveyed. It works amazingly well. Excellent track here as well!

Next up we have "All Become Sand" and this one is a really awesome dark ambient/Black metal track as well. It opens with the sound of a dark keyboard passage of course with some blowing winds that sound like a dust storm and it begins to paint images of desolation and darkness. but not in a depressing manner. One thing I will note here is that this one slows things down from the frantic pace of the previous two tracks and gives a more isolated emotional vision of a blackened night sky over a hot desert land. It picks up in tempo again and comes into a faster almost darkthrone esque blasting but then goes back into a midpaced affair with some really crazy chanting behind the vocals in places. The cold atmospheric textures on this one are some of my favorite on the album.

so guys lets listen to "All Become Sand" right here on music of destruction!......... and we are back and yes right here this track gets deep into your subconscious as does the whole album as it paints ancient visions and emotions of a time when humanity was in its most primodrial states and were still discovering life as it were. No technology, no socieities and no fucking bullshit. This is what i love about black metal right here ladies and gentlemen! Excellent track!

The album closes with "Walk With Feral" which is an almost tribal ritualistic track with alot of ritualistic tom work, blast beating and again those ancient sounding primordial riffs steeped in cold desolate night landscapes and swirling dissonance but all backed by powerful convinction of opening you up to ancient prehistoric consciousness which this album succeeds in through its entire 36 minute duration and this song might be the most chaotic on the record. But it's also invoking a strong sense of connection to these ancient primordial shifts in the music that will completely envelope you in its ancient world of isolation and peace and thats what this record succeeds at.
