Tonights review is on Uvall-Obsidian Torment. Released in january 2005 on Antinomian Records and limited to 1000 copies. Uvall consists of one sole member who is Lord Of Storms who does everything in the band and hails from minneapolis Minnesota. What's strange is how obscure this guy is when you consider how prolific the USBM scene was back in the late 90s till the present day.
One thing i discovered right away is that there is really no information on when he formed this project or long he was active for. He has only released 4 albums total, One demo, a split and 2 full lengths. Now whats really intriguing is why he is so obscure but i guess thats just part of the charm of this record. There are alot of ideas, concepts, and directions this album takes and while the themes of the album focus on depression, death, despair and torment it's not really a DSBM focused album because there is so many different elements being brought forth on the record and it certainly isn't one dimensional though with tracks like "They Search for truth where only lies are told".
There are these sombre depressing melancholic tones and trademarks of the genre present and its definitley a very mixed bag of different styles of hard rock and metal but with a black metal aesthetic, vocal style and ideology firmly in place. The album has alot of faster paced ice cold riffing and drumming in the vein of early Darkthrone and slower parts in the vein of Burzum and i would definitely cite these 2 bands as definite influences on this record.
But it also does have its own unique style and I even get alot of Motorhead influences being used on this record and its quite impressive that on something as primitive as this album is?, that he chose to incorporate alot of different styles that he must have been listening to at this time and likely still to the present day even though Uvall has not put out any albums in 15 years.
Tracks like Obsidian torment take us into the fast harsh elements of an ice cold landscape with blizzard sounding distorted guitars and a steady 4 on the floor drum beat that give it that metal/hard rock sound all while chilling cold vocals spew forth like a tortured individual on the brink of suicide and insanity and this combination works really well too.
One thing i will also note here is the production which is definitely raw and ice cold but it's also clear enough that you can hear all the insturments perfectly and nothing is overshadowing anything else and it certainly fits this style of black metal very well. The album also has alot of doom metal laden sections and repeition as well which is amazing to me too that really dig themselves into your skin and make you feel the raw passion, conviction, pain and hatred that this record is hellbent on delivering the listener in spades. Tracks like "My Name is Legion for we are many" really remind me of Darkthrone meets black sabbath in alot of ways and it works so fucking well to give this album a deep sense of variety, composition and dynamics to keep it from ever getting predictable and boring.
