On June 7, US President Donald Trump deployed 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles under Title 10 authority, escalating a federal-state confrontation over immigration enforcement. The move followed violent protests against ICE raids, where demonstrators clashed with federal agents and chanted anti-deportation slogans. Trump labelled the unrest “lawlessness” and accused California’s Democratic leadership of failing to maintain order. In response, Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the deployment as a politically motivated spectacle, warning it would inflame tensions rather than ease them. He also denied any cooperation with federal enforcement, stating that state officers were deployed only for public safety. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass criticised the federal actions but also condemned violence during protests. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed Marines were on high alert, further fuelling concerns. As troops arrive and rhetoric intensifies, the standoff marks a new chapter in the deepening political and ideological rift between California and the Trump administration.
