🎨 Penang's street art scene began in earnest around 2012 with Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic, whose commissioned works for the George Town Festival went viral. His pieces, often interactive and infused with local life, sparked a street art boom that turned the whole city into an open-air gallery. Since then, dozens of artists — local and international — have added their work to the city’s walls, turning Georgetown into one of the most recognizable aesthetic hubs in Asia.

🇬🇧 Penang’s colonial past dates back to 1786, when the British East India Company took control under Captain Francis Light. Georgetown became a strategic trading post and flourished under British rule, which explains the Victorian-era architecture, churches, and civic buildings you’ll still see today. The mix of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and colonial British influences gives Penang a layered, multicultural identity that’s unlike anywhere else in Malaysia.
