Easy 'Palomar' fishing knot that holds very well
I use this Knott called a 'Palomar' Knott to tie line to my hooks and lures. I learned it from Major League Fishing
Consider the cost value of your time and line in this way: if you use braided line it's good for life and I think it's basically invisible to fish. So IMO buying braided line and putting it to your reels will save money in the long run because it lasts and you don't have the cost of replacement every year or the time it takes to replace line. Of course you could get tangled in trees and have to cut line so much you have to replace it but that's the same for any line and trees on the bank are usually where the fish are. The cost of braided is a little more than the other the choices of monofilament or floracarbon and braided line is very difficult to get a good Knott without a leader line. So add a leader line of 4’ to braided of say fluorocarbon and to do that you would use the ‘Alberto’ Knott. It sounds like a lot but it’s actually quite easy and these knots really hold well.
Monofilament and fluorocarbon line must be changed out each year. These lines cost relatively less than braided but by the second year your total cost would be more than braided. You also save the time of yearly line changes and the cost of new line so to me it's a better deal in the long run. Fish can see monofilament but they can't see fluorocarbon or braided IMO. Monofilament isn't as strong as fluorocarbon IMO, but fluorocarbon has issues with twisting and it can be frustrating. There is a treatment of a spray that helps the line remember the spool it came from and reduce the twisting but if you forget your spray and your on the boat then that day might not be so much fun. I switched to braided this week.
I’ll post another video showing the 'Alberto' Knott that I use for adding a fluorocarbon leader to a braided line. It's common and IMO the best practice to add a 4-5’ leader line to braided line. In my experience the braided line is very difficult to get a Knott that won't slip off the hook. So by adding 4-‘5 of leader line such as fluorocarbon I can tie knotts that won't slip off. To tie braided to fluorocarbon use the Alberto Knott.
A couple of notes: I don't like foracarbon alone on my reel because it curls, twists and spins into a mess and it is super difficult to manage. there are sprays that keep it from getting tangled up and stop it from spinning by helping it have memory to the spool. But to me that's extra work and cost. The upside to fluorocarbon is that it is invisible to the fish similar to braided. So I use fluorocarbon and it’s great, but only as a leader line.
The other option for a leader line is monofilament, but it can be seen by the fish and isn't as strong as fluorocarbon. So I recently replaced all the line on my 3 main reels to have braided line mainly and to have 4-‘5 leader lines at the end of fluorocarbon. And to tie a lever line to braided you’ll need to use the Palomar Knott.
