Unboxing The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller 2

Nintendo didn't do a lot different when they went from the Nintendo Switch to the Nintendo Switch 2. It is more of an evolution than a revolution, and as such the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller and the Switch 2 Pro Controller 2 are quite similar as well. Let's take a a look at the new Switch 2 Pro Controller 2 and compare it to an original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to see if they are more different than similar.

Disclaimer: I do have a 3rd party shell on my original Switch Pro controller, however, the shell almost perfectly mimics the size and shape of the original. It simply has a Super NES controller theme to it with the controller color and button color. Dimensions and other features are pretty much identical.

From the Box:

The Switch 2 Pro Controller 2 includes the controller itself and a USB-A to USB-C cable. One thing that struck me almost immediately with this new version of the Pro Controller was that the orientation of the box was rotated 90 degrees. I'm sure some expert somewhere told Nintendo that this orientation would allow more to fit in a shipping container or that they could fit more in a display area.

Controller Size:

Overall the Switch and Switch 2 Pro Controllers are almost the same size, but I did get some slightly smaller measurements out of the case and grips out of the new Pro Controller 2 compared to the original. It is less than a 2mm difference, so it's nothing to write home about.

Face:

Much like the Joy-Con 2 controllers, the face buttons on the Switch 2 Pro Controller are slightly larger than the original. I'm happy to see that, as while I didn't think the original's buttons were small, larger ones are better for me. Also, the spacing between the buttons is pretty consistent so while they are larger they are not more crowded.

The D-Pad is pretty much identical between both the original and the new Pro Controller 2. I always liked the original Pro Controller's D-Pad, and the Switch 2's works great and feels great too.

One thing I did not point out in the video is the addition of the C button to launch game chat. In testing the functionality with Jay from @SquarePegs and Kris from @GameDadShow this worked wonderfully and was intuitive to use.

Player Indicator:

One of the differences between the 2 controllers is the placement of the Player Indicator LEDS. The original Pro Controller featured the LEDS on the lower part of the controller, while the Pro Controller 2's LEDS are on the top by the pairing button and USB-C port. I don't like this change as it is easier, for me, to see the indicator at a glance when it is closer to me.

Headphone Jack:

Nintendo is finally embracing game chat and has added a 3.5mm headphone jack to the bottom. I am sure that is the reason why the player indicator has been moved to the top of the controller.

Back Buttons

I know for many this is a big thing, for me, not so much. I don't care about back buttons, I don't like to use them, but for those who want them, it is nice that they are included. I am glad they are not as pronounced and are relatively flat compared to the grips.
