Edgar Cayce, the renowned "Sleeping Prophet," was born on March 18, 1877, in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, to Leslie Burr Cayce and Carrie Elizabeth Major Cayce, both farmers. Edgar was the eldest surviving child of six, as several siblings died in infancy. His grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Cayce, a farmer with reputed psychic abilities, significantly influenced Edgar’s early spiritual development, fostering his interest in the metaphysical.
In 1903, Edgar married Gertrude Evans, a deeply religious woman from Hopkinsville. Initially skeptical of Edgar’s psychic readings, Gertrude grew to support him, faithfully transcribing his trance sessions. The couple had three sons: Hugh Lynn (born 1907), Milton Porter (born 1911), and Edgar Evans (born 1918). Tragically, Milton Porter died in infancy, a loss that deeply affected the family. Hugh Lynn and Edgar Evans both served in World War II. Hugh Lynn later became a key figure in promoting his father’s work, managing the Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.), while Edgar Evans, an engineer, also contributed to the organization.
The Cayce family faced financial struggles, exacerbated by Edgar’s reluctance to profit from his readings. Despite challenges, their close-knit bond and shared belief in Edgar’s mission sustained them, leaving a lasting legacy in spiritual and holistic healing.
