The Cancer Survivors Vejigante Comparsa Project is collective of Cancer Survivors, families or representatives that are participating in the 2025 La Parada Nacional Puertorriqueña NYC (The National Puerto Rican Day Parade NYC). Our project has participated in last year’s Fiestas de Loiza, Carnaval de Vejigantes in Puerto Rico and last year’s 116th Street Festival and Puerto Ricans Parade 2024.
The idea is to bring cancer survivors, families or representatives dressed as Vejigantes (masked and dress) to dance in this year's parade June 8, 2025 in NYC.
As you know, cancer statistics in our communities throughout the United States and Puerto Rico have increased dramatically. A large number of young people are being diagnosed with this condition, and we want to emphasize the importance of prevention and early detection to achieve a good survival outcome. In short, we're calling on cancer survivors or their representatives to walk, dance, and enjoy the great walk in the largest event in the USA, New York City, La Parada Puertorriqueña (The Puerto Rican Parade) 2025.
The objective is to educate about early cancer detection and prevention using the largest platform event in the United States. The proposal has several additional components: an informational and educational website, a series of mask making workshops, conferences on vejigantes history and we will broadcast live streaming from the parade via cameras installed in some mask.
