The story follows the adventures of Pecos Bill, a boy who is raised by coyotes in the American West.
The story begins with Pecos Bill as a baby when his family leaves New England for the American West. While crossing the Pecos River in Texas, baby Bill falls out of the wagon and is saved by a coyote who adopts him. Bill grows up with the coyotes, learning to eat, sleep, and howl like them. One day, a drifter convinces Bill that he is a Texan and should herd longhorn cattle. Bill becomes a legend after defeating a giant rattlesnake, taming a wild horse named Lightning, and teaching cowboys how to lasso a bull.
He marries Slewfoot Sue, and during their wedding ceremony, Sue is bucked off Lightning and ends up in the sky. Pecos Bill lassos a tornado to rescue her, and they eventually land on his family's wagon, leading to a family reunion.
