* What If Maurice Clarett Had Played for Ohio State in 2003 & 2004?
Maurice Clarett's freshman season at Ohio State in 2002 was nothing short of remarkable. He rushed for 1,237 yards and 16 touchdowns, leading the Buckeyes to an undefeated season and a national championship. But what if Clarett had played in 2003 and 2004? The ripple effects on Ohio State football could have been monumental.
In 2003, Ohio State finished 11-2 without Clarett. With him in the backfield, it's reasonable to estimate that Clarett could have added 1,500 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns to the team’s offense. This extra production might have helped the Buckeyes overcome Michigan and Wisconsin, both of whom defeated Ohio State that season. An undefeated season could have led to a national championship rematch against LSU in the Sugar Bowl, providing Jim Tressel and his team another shot at glory.
In 2004, Ohio State struggled to an 8-4 finish, but Clarett's presence might have turned things around. An additional 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns could have provided the offense with much-needed balance. Victories against teams like Northwestern and Purdue, who upset the Buckeyes, seem plausible with Clarett in the lineup. A 10-2 or better finish might have secured Ohio State a BCS bowl appearance, perhaps even a shot at USC or Oklahoma in a marquee postseason matchup.
Off the field, Clarett’s success could have solidified his legacy as one of college football’s greatest running backs, potentially elevating his draft stock and changing the narrative surrounding his career. The combination of his talent and Ohio State’s dominant defense would have made the Buckeyes perennial title contenders during his tenure, shaping the course of college football history.
