Alright so by request from a good friend of mine i am reviewing something this person has been wanting to see for quite a while, and coincedentally i was going to review this album today anyways. Todays review is of DARKTHRONE-A Blaze In The Northern Sky.
Now this is an album that was a direct response to the commercialization of death and thrash metal. When so many bands were opting for a professional polished sound and a more accessible direction? there was a group of musicians in Norway who decided that "This is not alright".
Now you may not be aware of the heinous crimes and acts of violence that the musicians involved with the creation of Norwegian black metal were involved with, The church burnings, grave desecration, murder and ultimately Dead's Suicide in 1991.
But Im not here to talk about all of those events. Darkthrone avoided all of these things and did their own thing. Darkthrone was not always a black metal band either. Their debut album "Soulside Journey" is in fact a Death metal album and they opted to change their sound to raw primitive black metal in 1992 when they began to record "A Blaze In The Northern Sky"
Now the main lineup has always been Fenriz and Nocturno Culto. Fenriz on drums and vocals and Nocturno Culto on guitars. The band has used session members in the past but primarily this has always been a 2 man show for the most part.
Alright so how does this album establish itself so firmly in black metal and why is it so praised but also equally hated at the same time?
Well, I think that one thing I have to mention here was the decision to make black metal to begin with. Now their forefathers Bathory, Mayhem, and Venom were certainly cited as influences for Darkthrones venture into the world of black metal.
Upon listening to this magnum opus you quickly discover that something much more sinister and darker and downright misanthropic is at work here. This was something that in 1992 was completely unheard of and scared the living shit out of alot of people. This is after all true norwegian black metal.
Now that we got all that out of the way what are you in store for as you listen to this masterpiece of cold hatred? well, its definitely going to test your ears for one thing because the production is as cold as the frost covered nordlands.
The guitar riffs often sound like chainsaws cutting through your flesh and the drums and vocals are basically as primal and raw in their intensity and viciousness as you can possibly get.
The raw emotion of this album is absolutely astounding as it carries you through its valleys of ice cold misanthropy and frozen melancholy and despair like no album could from 1992. I mean think about it guys we had all heard thrash, death, grindcore, doom metal etc..
But what we got with "A Blaze In The Northern Sky" was something timeless and vastly different than anything outt here in this period and that was the point. Everything about this album is genre defining for the second wave of black metal. The ice cold hateful primitive riffing, the primal almost ritualistic drums that never border on technical prowess, and the vocals that sound like a demented mental patient that just escaped and is currently on a murderous rage.
Ancient emotions of harkening back to the ways of the old norweigian culture are also being explored here and these concepts are implemented in the insturmentation. This record is a firm double middle finger to commercialized metal and it continues to be up to this day.
In fact Darkthrone are so anti commercial that they have once been nominated for a grammy and they downright refused to accept it and told the columnist to go fuck himself Darkthrone is not about grammy awards or any commercial filth of the music industry.
