So tonights review is of an album i just recently got in the mail and many consider this one to be one of the most defining albums in all of thrash metal. Now that's not to say that their previous album "endless pain" wasn't the stuff thrash legends are made of now is it? certainly not. But tonight we are diving into Kreator-Pleasure To Kill with the bonus tracks from the EP-Flag of hate. What a damned treasure this album is and i honestly think german thrash metal dances circles around american thrash. One of the reasons i think this however is because of just how godamned savagely aggressive and emotionally charged this album is and german thrash metal in general.
Now if you are unaware of the big 3 and the big 4 of thrash metal i will educate you guys. The big "3" of thrash is of course german thrash with Kreator,Sodom, and Destruction. While the american big 4 is of course Metallica, slayer, Anthrax and Testament. Why Megadeth never made it in? I have no idea but they should be in that list in my opinion
This makes every other album of 1986? pale in comparison, now of course these are just my opinions and yours may differ and that is perfectly fine with me. Some people prefer the other bands i just mentioned over Kreator. However I think Kreator is the heaviest aggressive thrash metal band of all time and are definitely my favorite.
The band was called Tormentor in the old days (1982-1984). Both demos were released under that name. The first line-up was Mille, Rob, and Ventor. A few guitarists were tried before Tritze joined after the Flag of Hate EP. Michael Wulf was in the band for a few days and didn't play on Pleasure to Kill, despite his getting credit.
Now the lineup on Pleasure to KIll is as follows
Mille Petrozza Guitars and vocals
Ventor Drums
Roberto Fioretti Bass
So the album opens with a ominous dark guitar passage "Choir of the damned" and keyboard work signaling the end of all things to come and you instantly get the tone of what this album is going to be comprised of. It really gets your blood pumping and mind ready for the sonic assault that your about to undergo with this masterpiece of thrash metal insanity.
Next we have one of the most Iconic tracks in Kreator's entire discography with "Ripping Corpse" and my god, if this isn't a riff fest of complexity and intricacy than i dont know what is guys. This is a full on blasting assault of thrash lunacy with hints of higher notes thrown in that give it an almost early black metal like approach and complexity but its so fucking heavy that it almost defines all genres to date at this time. This was something completely different for 1986. The pounding brutal drums, the soaring super fast lead sections and ear shredding rythm of the guitar is executed with absolute perfection and it's hard to imagine an album with so much prowess as this one. The bass can be heard very well and i truly appreciate this aspect to the song as well. Lyrically and emotionally this one is all about the ripping corpse basically committing every aborrhent violent atrocity that is possible on many victims.. absolutely insane lyrics and great song writing. You can certainly feel this violence and aggression all throughout the godamned album
Next up is "Death is your savior" and that's exactly what it sounds like, a death trip straight into savagery, violence, aggression and all things dark and brutal. Did i mention how unbelievably relentless this albums intensity is? do you think kreator slow down for even a second on this album? The answer is NO in capital letters because they don't need to.
Alot of people bitched and complained about this album being "one dimensional" Well, i for one happen to find this quality one of the strongest points of the album. This isn't a band thats going to write slower ballads ladies and gentleman. This is a band that has one goal in mind and that's to completely melt your face with unrelenting, pulse pounding, bone shattering intensity and no one in thrash metal does it better than Kreator. However i think Sodom and Destruction are aggressive as hell just in different ways.
