Alright so The Years Of Decay opens with an absolute thrash metal epic called "Time To Kill" and it has a really ominous bass tone that plays into the fading in of the guitars followed by some really anthemic drumming that lets you know immediately what you are in for on this mammoth of a fucking album. One thing i will note right away is the bass and how awesome the mixing was for it and all of the other insturments on this album. What is it about the 80s production that made bands sound so fucking badass? This godamned song is so full of passion, conviction, energy and pissed off venom. The insturmentation is frantic, fast paced and right in your fucking face with steel aggression clawing its way into your fucking skin. The riffing and drumming is so memmorable and offers alot of variety and compositional prowess here.
Now i gotta admit i hadn't really given Overkill a chance very much in the past, well im glad to say that my mind has changed about them now. I can definitely see what made them so unique in 80s thrash metal because what we have here is something that definitely fits into the thrash metal category but it's also something very unique. Now this could be in part due to Bobby Blitz's vocals but i also think it has alot to do with the bands approach to thrash metal overall. The lead solo at the very end of the track is just absolutely earth shaking and incredible and i can't think of a better way to wrap up an amazing opener to this classic fucking album ladies and gentleman!
Next up we have "Elimination" and it opens with some incredible lightning fast guitar work and drumming and it doesn't have a long drawn out intro. Instead what we get is fast pounding aggressive drumming and some lightning speed fast soloing here that will make your fucking jaw hit the floor. Now i gotta admit that it did take me a while to get used to Bobby's higher pitched vocals, but one thing i will say is that they kind of have that iron maiden/judas priest classic operatic feel to them. I
it's almost like a thrash metal scream meets opera and it works so fucking well. Now we have some of the most savage drumming and solo work going on here as well. this madness continues on throughout the tracks switch between super fast thrashing and the more mid paced thrashing madness that Overkill are experts at delivering guys. This is jaw dropping thrash metal and now i honestly know why so many people praise Overkill ladies and gentleman because this fucking band means business and im now on the side of the Overkill legion. Killer song here as well guys!
Next up we have the track "I Hate" and it opens with some really dark hateful riffing before it sways into it's mid paced thrash metal stomp attack on all of your senses. One thing this track does very well is convey a deep sense of rage and aggression and the drumming and guitar work on this one is very catchy and has some amazing hooks that pull you in and make you want to break your fucking neck and i absolutely love this song to death. The conviction delivered here is unparralled and these maniacs know how to create thrash metal that leaves that deep impression on you and there is nothing here that is "forgettable" guys.
Instead what we get is a incredibly driven thrash metal epic that refuses to compromise on accessibility and radio friendly production and sound. Yes i am aware of metal radio stations out there that play stuff like Overkill but these are mostly internet or sattellite radio stations of course. this is a anthem to all things about society that sucks and almost has a punk like feel to the lyrics which is awesome! In fact some of this album does have some punk influence in it which is absolutely amazing in my humble opinion guys!
