RBCN Summer Drill Series #1: “One-Second Shooting Drill:” Coach Robert Montgomery Knight, Indiana University

Former Holy Cross College head men’s coach, Mike McBride, showed us this shooting drill he learned from attending a Coach Knight practice. This drill is designed to emphasize the following aspects:
- Cutting & Screening with proper techniques & timing
- Types of cuts we taught were: flare, vertical, basket, backdoor, tight, vertical, spartan, packet, & get-away.
- Taking the ball to the action & precision passing
- Offensive Chatter
- Getting a shot off in one-second
It is our contention at RBCN, anytime one has the opportunity to learn from Coach Knight, he/she should take full advantage of it. This drill can be employed with any offense, no matter if it’s man-to-man O’ or zone O’. Multipurpose drills like this are great, as coaches who have any degree of innovative creativity can take it & make their own. Bend this drill around & make it fit your program/players needs.
We used this drill relentlessly in the off-season with our younger players & veterans. For those who follow RBCN, this drill was our lead-up to our "Entry Drill," which was our most critical drill used for teaching how to read & cut off screens properly & with timing. The "Entry Drill" was the prelude to our "Cutthroat Drill," which was our players favorite, competitive drill.
