Dade City, FL - Pasco County deputies shot and killed a 25-year-old man who fired four rounds at them Tuesday night, according to the sheriff's office.

It happened around 8:25 p.m. at a home on Rose Avenue in Dade City.

At a news conference just after midnight, Pasco County Colonel Tait Sanborn said deputies first tried to make contact with Cristian Javier Estrada Perez on June 4 to serve him a court order for a mental health evaluation on behalf of his family.

The family reportedly told deputies that Perez exhibited “erratic behavior" and had made threats to them. They told authorities he was also known to carry a gun.

After an unsuccessful attempt to contact Perez on June 4, deputies attempted to serve the order again on June 5, 6 and 9.

According to Sanborn, deputies returned on June 10 with a plan to talk to Perez.

Deputies said Perez did not respond to multiple attempts to communicate with him. After a warning and several requests for Perez to exit the home, deputies deployed pepper balls inside.

That's when, according to the sheriff's office, Perez fired four rounds at deputies from a gun that was strapped to his hand.

Two deputies returned fire, Colonel Sanborn said. Perez was shot and killed.

"We had two deputies that discharged their firearm. There were approximately seven deputies there to try and take him safely into custody. Unfortunately, that was not an option that he left available to us," Sanborn said.

No deputies were hurt.
