Week 20 Tutorial: Solomon's Final Days ... Not So Wise (1 Kings 10–11; Proverbs 25–31; Ecclesiastes)

Week 20 Readings of our 2025 Chronological Bible-in-a-Year Reading Challenge see us finish off Proverbs and read through the Book of Ecclesiastes. A melancholic work indeed and very different to the other Books of Wisdom credited to this wise King.

But was Ecclesiastes really written by Solomon?

That aside, in this tutorial, Chad draws our main attention to the priority of the narrative aspects of our scheduled readings, as we witness the final days of Solomon's life and reign as Israel's king.

Despite his God-given wisdom, in his latter years Solomon turns his heart away from the Lord and commits idolatry, worshipping the foreign gods of his (many!) wives. The divine penalty for this is a crippling of his legacy as the prophet Ahijah announces that, following Solomon's death, the grand and glorious Kingdom of Israel will be split into two.
