Why Should Small Countries refuse to play the Geopolitical Game? (SNSY)

Why should smaller countries fiercely protect their sovereignty by refusing to be pawns in a geopolitical game between empires? Why would small states acting for their own best interest NOT be a hindrance to global trade? Why is the whole geopolitical game going on between the empires in Europe, America, Russia, China etc particularly vulnerable to small states just asserting themselves internationally?
