An Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, flight AI171 bound for London, crashed near Ahmedabad airport shortly after takeoff at 1:17 pm on Thursday, carrying 232 passengers and 10 crew members. The aircraft went down in the Meghaninagar area, with thick black smoke seen billowing from the crash site, and part of the plane landed on the BJ Medical College hostel, causing numerous casualties among medical students. Emergency response teams rushed to the scene as rescue operations continued. In talks with Firstpost, aviation expert Sanat Kaul emphasised the tragedy's gravity, noting the Dreamliner's previously strong safety record and the urgent need for government action to restore public confidence in aviation safety.
