Tragic Air India Flight AI171 Crash Near Ahmedabad
On June 12, 2025, Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, tragically crashed shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The flight was en route to London Gatwick Airport and was carrying 242 individuals, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members. The crash resulted in the deaths of 241 people, with one survivor—a British national of Indian origin, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh—who is currently receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained during the incident.
Flight Details and Immediate Aftermath
The aircraft took off at approximately 1:38 PM IST and crashed into a residential area near Meghani Nagar, approximately five minutes after departure. The plane struck a medical college hostel, leading to additional fatalities on the ground, including five medical students. Rescue operations were promptly initiated, with teams working to recover bodies and provide aid to the injured. DNA testing is being utilized to identify many of the victims due to the severity of the crash.
Passengers and Crew
Among the 242 individuals on board, there were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese citizens, and 1 Canadian. Notably, former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was among the passengers. The flight crew consisted of Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, an experienced pilot with over 8,200 flight hours, and First Officer Clive Kundar, who had logged 1,100 flight hours. Both pilots were trained in emergency procedures and international long-haul flying.
Investigation and Response
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has initiated an investigation into the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports indicate that a MAYDAY call was issued shortly after takeoff, but the aircraft lost communication with air traffic control before the crash. Investigators are considering various factors, including potential engine failure, mechanical issues, or other technical malfunctions.
In response to the tragedy, Air India, under the Tata Group, has expressed condolences and is fully cooperating with authorities in the investigation. The airline is also offering compensation and support to the victims' families. World leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and French President Emmanuel Macron, have extended their condolences and pledged support.
Broader Impact
This incident marks the first major crash involving a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, raising concerns about the aircraft's safety record. Boeing has acknowledged the reports and is working to gather more information. The crash has also prompted the UK to dispatch investigators and initiate consular support for the affected families. Vigils and prayer services have been held across the UK in solidarity with the affected communities.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working to determine the exact cause of the crash and to provide support to the victims' families and communities affected by this devastating tragedy.
