Deep in the middle of nowhere (aka the Desert of Turkmenistan), a Soviet drilling accident in 1971 accidentally opened up what locals now call the Gates of Hell — a massive crater that’s been on fire ever since.

Yep. That’s right: it’s been burning for half a century.

Bad Soviet decisions were made.
