In August 2016, 10-year-old Victoria Martens was tragically murdered in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Her dismembered body was discovered in a bathtub, partially wrapped in a burning blanket. The case garnered national attention due to its horrific nature and the involvement of multiple individuals.
Fabian Gonzales, who had been living with Victoria and her mother, Michelle Martens, was arrested along with Michelle and Jessica Kelley, Gonzales's cousin. Initially, all three were charged with first-degree murder and other serious offenses. However, during the investigation, new evidence came to light. Prosecutors revealed that Michelle Martens had falsely implicated Gonzales in the crime. DNA analysis indicated the presence of an unknown male's DNA on Victoria's body, leading authorities to believe that Gonzales and Martens were not present at the time of the murder.
Jessica Kelley, who was present during the incident, testified that she was under the influence of methamphetamine and allowed an unknown man into the apartment, who then killed Victoria. She later pleaded guilty to reckless child abuse resulting in death and was sentenced to 44 years in prison.
Michelle Martens also pleaded guilty to child abuse resulting in death and was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
