what is it that makes DSBM so godamned appealing? Well for a lot of people this genre is sometimes labeled as “over dramatic” or “childish” or “emo” now why does the ignorance of the genre continue to propagate? Well, in my opinion it’s because people really don’t understand what it’s really about. It certainly isn’t about the artists expressing some kind of bullshit teenage angst or anxiety. It’s about the destruction and annihilation of mankind as this genre carries a enormous emphasis on atmosphere and nihilistic and suicidal ideology as a whole. But let’s forget about all of that for a second because I think it’s important to examine where the genre originated and its stylistic influences. So back in 1991 there was a band called “Bethlehem” that began incorporating a more depressive suicidal approach to their art, via lyrical themes and very harsh abrasive melancholic riffs that suffocated the listener in morbid thoughts and destructive emotional complexity. I mean seriously let’s face it, without Bethlehem I don’t think Black Metal would have gone as far into the abyss as it has today.

We also must draw our attention onto another band from the early 90s as well a Norwegian band called STRID that originated in 1991 as Malefitor before becoming STRID in 1992. Now STRID were one of the first bands to truly focus on creating a horrific depressive/misanthropic claustrophobic atmosphere. I mean all you have to do is listen to one of the greatest DSBM classics ever conceived with “End Of Life” and it will become very apparent as to where this entire explosion of DSBM would get a lot of its fundamental roots from and its overall aesthetics.

Now one could possibly argue that Burzum were also the Pioneers of this new one man brand of metal as well. The reason I also mention Burzum is because way back in 1992 he also released his very first full length simply titled Burzum. Burzum’s focus was also on creating a more depressive atmosphere but also very rooted in epical story telling and Tolliken lore if that makes any sense. But I also feel that these 3 bands had a very strong impact and single handedly each contributed to the creation now more commonly known as Depressive suicidal black metal.

(yes I can see all the elitists rolling their eyes in disgust already) but hey who gives a shit what they think? After all we are here to talk about my tastes not theirs. Granted there is something to be said about artistic stagnation within the genre of black metal. This is something that is both praised and widely celebrated within the genre, why you might ask? Well its actually quite simple. Black metal was created in a response to the rampant rise of commercialized thrash metal and Death Metal.

Many artists at the time thought that these 2 genres were far too trendy and turning metal into something they thought was going against what made metal special in their eyes (now of course I share these same opinions as well) But I digress because at the end of the day metal is a very wide spectrum and there is a plethora of sub genres that would keep me talking until tomorrow if I was to dissect all of them (even though some of these sub genres just shouldn’t exist in my opinion) Most people out there do not enjoy this genre of metal and rightfully so. It is afterall rooted in Satanism, misanthropy, and death which for most people seems “Goofy” or not something that they want to explore in their music and again this is all fine and dandy.
