The album opens with Strength beyond Strength which is one of the most insane openers ive heard on an album of this caliber. Its fast, pounding and heavy with Dime’s incredible knack for groove/thrash inducing madness but also his penchant for technical prowess and power and emotion that he delivers through his riffing is absolutely a marvel to behold. Couple this with Rex, Vinnie and Phil and this track just completely demolishes you with brutality, groove and hard hitting pissed off venom and rage. Now lyrically the song touches on themes how the lower class of society rise and take control of the streets and that going against the sheep herd minded conformity of society and its indoctrinations is true strength but also exposing the lower levels of human life that society created through its greed and ignorance of what truly matters in the world which is equality and respect for all life, not just those who put money in peoples pockets you know what I mean?

Next up is the Track “Becoming” which opens with that rage fueled groove infested thrashing texas southern bluesy madness from dimebag along with that screeching whammy bar he has become so fucking masterful at emphasizing in his guitar technique, you combine this with of course Vinnie’s absolute stellar drumming with Rex brown thundering alongside it all, Then of course Phil Anselmo screaming and growling like a deranged psychopath screaming things like “I can see you, can fuck you, inside of you. Staring through

Your eyes. Belittle your friends to serve me, to suck me,

To realize my saving grasp. I of suicide. I the unlord.

I'm born again with snakes eyes

Becoming Godsize” It’s not hard to see where the music was headed. This was also at the time when Pantera would begin to fall apart a little bit. Tensions in the band were already quite high at this point. This is one of the reasons why Phil Anselmo recorded The Great Southern Trendkill separately from Pantera. By the end of this album he had returned to New Orleans to Record with his other band DOWN and released DOWN’s debut album in 1995. Rex Brown was also an active member of Down from 1998 until 2011.

Down was formed in 1991. Yes, I will be reviewing all of DOWN’s material as well here on Music Of Destruction as Phil Anselmo is my favorite metal frontman of all time. Back to Pantera now of course, well In my humble opinion, I feel like Pantera should have taken a break that they obviously needed during this time. Now I don’t know when Phil’s back injury occurred exactly but the downward spiral into drug abuse did begin around this time as well. Pantera wouldn’t be the same after this as Vinnie and Dime began to feel like Phil’s commitment to Pantera was waning. But nonetheless this is still an incredible Pantera album. There are so many incredible moments on this record that it’s nearly impossible to choose a favorite song. As this is the case with most Of Pantera’s music.
