Alright ladies and gentleman how are you doing?. I hope your doing well. Welcome to another Episode of Music Of Destruction! Alright so in honor of Dime’s passing I want to welcome you to Pantera week right here on the channel and this is part 4 and tonight I am reviewing the Follow up to Cowboys From Hell Pantera album With Vulgar Display Of Power Yes im reviewing every Pantera record in depth because Pantera is the best metal band in history. Vulgar Display Of Power was released in 1992 on Atco Records Now, for those of you who don’t know (and im not quite sure how you couldn’t) Pantera was Dimebag Darrell Abbott on guitar. Vinnie Paul Abbott on drums. Rex Brown on bass and of course Phillip Hansen Anselmo on vocals.
Alright so, Vulgar Display Of Power. Does it live up to the mighty debut Cowboys From Hell? In my opinion it surpasses it. This is after all, Pantera. Not a band that ever rested on their laurels. The band knew that they had big expectations for their sophomore follow up to Cowboys From Hell. Well they absolutely demolished it in spades on Vulgar Display Of Power. Now, don’t get me wrong. I am not saying Cowboys From Hell isn’t a masterpiece… (See my review of it right up there in the corner of the screen) But Vulgar Display Of Power to me, Is the record when Pantera firmly established themselves. It was the album that really saw them coming into full ass kicking texas blues/Sludge soaked venomous metal. There is actually a really cool story behind the album cover. Pantera paid a guy 10$ everytime they had to punch him just to get the right shot for the cover. So they had to punch him 31 or 32 times. Jesus, try and imagine being punched in the face 31 times or more and you get an idea of what this album sounds like.
Well, to me its all about taking back your power and stomping out all opposition and the opener “Mouth For War” instantly reminds us that Pantera were only concerned with pushing the bounderies of their particular brand of metal even further than they did on Cowboys From Hell. Mouth for war also one of the songs that was used on the Quake II soundtrack. As im pretty sure a lot of Pantera’s music was used in Quake II which is just astounding. It definitely fit the games atmosphere very well. Onto the track itself, it fucking delivers that amazing savage groove hook inducing headbanging frenzy that only dimebag, Vinnie, Rex and Phil could deliver. This is heavy, emotional, infectious and fucking powerful balls to the wall Texas southern metal. How on earth can anyone say that this record was a flop? Unbelievable man! This is easily one of the best opening songs on a record period. With lyrics that touch on subjects of inner strength, Revenge and personal triumph it is definitely a song about overcoming all odds facing you in life and remaining absolutely true and transparent about everything you stand for. To me this is pantera saying “fuck you, you think we are just a 1 hit wonder”? clearly, this is not the case! Killer song ladies and gentleman!
Every song I have been talking about feature the recipe for the perfect groove metal songs- Dime Darrell's tight riffing, killing drums, pounding bass, and the vocals. They match the album's in-your-face and heavy attitude perfectly.
The production sums up the whole album. Perfect. It is perfectly equalized, and has the trademark Pantera crunch to it. None of the instruments sound distant, nor taking over the other instruments or vocal lines, but accentuates and emphasizes them. Mandatory for any metal fan, and if you don't like this album, you can "Walk on home, boy."
