Pantera, few bands in all of music have people as divided in their opinions like Pantera. For those who don't know, Pantera is a metal band formed in Arlington Texas in 1982. They started out life as a hair metal band in the 80s and for most of that time it was Those were dark days for Pantera, so dark that Pantera disowned them. I was never a fan of the popular coined term “Glamtera” days in the 80s but to suffice it to say there were many people who were fans of the band back in this era. Then Phil Anselmo joined. His entering the band saved them. His influence in the fate of Pantera can't be understated. He didn't do much at first, as he was the new guy, but he did enough to make Pantera's 4th album, if not great, a serviceable album. Listen to the jump in quality between "I Am The Night" and "Power Metal", and the difference become quite clear. However, that album didn't show the true interest of Anselmo, and it is on this album that we get a picture of what he wanted for the band.

The album opens with the absolute anthemic “Cowboys from hell ” and this is far and wide to be considered one Panteras most iconic songs. This along with Cemetary Gates, Domination, The Sleep and The Art Of Shredding are absolute brutal anthems that millions of people know off by heart. This is pure groove driven Texas southern venom. Hellbent on establishing themselves as the premiere metal band of the 90s, Pantera pushed the very limits of metal in 1990. At a time when so many bands were slowing down. I mean by this time Metallica and Megadeth were already writing slow ballads and growing soft in their age. Well Pantera were the complete Opposite. Dime, Vinnie, Rex and Phil are absolute beasts on this record and it shows throughout the whole album.

Primal Concrete Sledge is an absolute monster of double bass, Insane savage Riffs from both Rex and Dime. With Phil belching fire spitting venomous vocals. About midway through the song it slows down into a crawling sludgy bluesy groove section with Vinnies immaculate triple double bass pounding away like a fucking lunatic. Phils vocal range on this track is insane as well! One of the heaviest songs out there for 1990 in my opinion. But then again that can be said about this whole fucking album. Next up is Psycho Holiday which is another Metallic beast of fire and Texas Rattlesnake soaked venomous riffing and Drumming that sounds like it could incite fucking riots in front of the right crowds. Dimes solo on this track is absolutely thunderous as he plays with an insane precision and technicality that is fucking unprecedented.

Next up is “Heresy” and this one opens with some awesome double bass work from Vinnie paul and some absolute incredible thrashing groove riffing madness from Dimebag Darrell and it envelopes you so much throughout the entire song… and this is one of the darkest songs on the record as well. There are just so many things going on within this masterpiece that its very difficult to put into words. This band will live on forever and nothing will ever replace Pantera and what they did for heavy music and the metal scene in general. They were never ones to rest on their laurels and they were not ones to compromise on changing their style to suite trends or appeal to a wider mainstream audience. This was one of those times when metal was beginning to die off because of the surge of grunge that was happening in the 90s as well.
