Alright so this monster of chaos and insanity opens with the track “Imperial” and begins with some of the most insane drumming ive ever heard on an album. Guitar riffs pound you in the face so godamned hard youd swear it was like an army of tanks firing in all directions.

Explosive and brutal in all of its menacing chaos and pulse pounding instrumentation. Every musician on this album is at the top of their game on this album ladies and gentleman. There is some amazing keyboard work going on in this track as well. I truly believe this is probably one of the heaviest fucking albums ever made in the history of metal period. Devin townsend is an absolute mad man and this record sounds like it was recorded from the depths of chaos and insanity itself

Right from the get-go the album hails with a thick wall of sound that is of unprecedented enormity in the SYL catalog. It is almost so brilliantly composed that it sounds like it could all fall apart at any moment. The drums pulverize with their loud and deliciously voluminously padded kicks and a snare that echoes the aggressive color and tone of a whip and Gene Hoglan is one of my favorite drummers of all time. The guitars, evoking the thought of a mesh of steel ropes juggling and ripping into each other, conflate into the overall mix with brute force. This is one of the major aspects why Alien will remain timeless. Even 14 years later this album still manages to sound like something that can never ever be duplicated or even approached in its viciousness and velocity of impact.
Its production is maybe the overarching reason why this album resonates with me on so many levels along with how emotionally charged and pissed off it really is .

Townsend, known for his trademark wall of sound, completely carried this principle to its utmost extremes here and he sure as hell knows what he is doing when it comes to composing music that comes from the most crazy aspects of his mind. The instruments sound mind-bogglingly huge, overbearing and enveloping from all directions and it does not let up for even a second and In a sense it is almost decidedly claustrophobic, however, with enough parts where, due to the execution of a certain rhythm, the guitars and drums are assorted more or less focus individually, creating a space to inhale for a second again. So lets check out SKEKSIS guys. ……. And we are back here on music of destruction
A similar oscillation of strings can be examined in Skeksis, Devin’s favorite SYL song and it is not surprising why that is the case.

This is easily my favorite SYL song as well, along with Shistorm and this is a beast of a song one could dissect into several different movements, it begins with an exotic and martial rhythm which segues into a chaotic mess amplified by a menacingly sharp synth in the background channeling the energetic tide of sound that permutes further and further until the end of the song. The pulsating mesh of a hacksaw riff around the 0:40 mark onwards wobbles back and forth almost collapsing in on itself all the while the double bass drums demonstratively accompany the restless rhythm bombarding the listener unrelentingly from all sides. Shitstorm opens with an absolute beast of primal force and aggression that make Gene Hoglan seem fucking inhuman with how fast he can play. The menacing guitar riffing assassinates all of your senses as well. This is truly the sound of a complete insane mental breakdown on the verge of exploding into utter fucking chaos.
Walls of sound that pull you into its deep pit of insanity and anger are gut wrenching on this one as well.
