So this monster of a record opens with the track Appuyi and there is no ambient intro here Just pure blown out buzzing guitar that plays a really somber melancholic riff for about 1 minute. I gotta say that this is some of the buzziest blown out hateful production I’ve ever heard on a black metal album. Next up is Hyungga Is A Tangled Story Part 1 and this one opens with some of the sickest hateful buzzing ive ever heard, combined with the vocals which sound like the tortured strangles of a dead war victim as Pyha’s music is very focused on anti war themes given that he is from Seoul South Korea. It then breaks into a soft clean guitar passage with some keyboard work and some soft spoken whispers. But don’t let that fool you, it doesn’t stay quiet for long as that insane buzzing distortion of pure seething hatred and despair come back in full force and rip your ears to shreds.
Then the drum machine kicks in and the howled desperate shrieks of torture continue and get right inside your head. Guitar riffs are simple and very hypnotic and powerful. The drumming? Simple and to the point. One might ask themselves upon listening to this “what the hell did this kid go through to make something so wicked and dark”? Well from what I feel on this album my best guess would have to be the conditions of growing up in a country like south korea which is extremely oppressed and war torn.
Despair and isolation hang very thick on this track with the production being super distorted and raw but also very hot and barren. This isn’t “COLD” black metal in the sense of ice covered mountains and bushlands… No this is Hot, claustrophobic and absolutely desolate in its delivery. The buzzing of the guitars reminds me of a chainsaw cutting deep into your soul as it proceeds along its path with deep emotions of hatred, sorrow, despair, pain and agonizing death.. How in the hell a 14 year old came up with something so fucking brilliant is beyond me… So lets check out Hyungga is a tangled story part 1…….
And we are back, so yes Buzzy, Blown out, super simplistic and hypnotic in its delivery but also some of the darkest emotionally charged art ever put to fucking tape. I still have not found an album to this day with the kind of powerful emotions, atmosphere and overall effect that this record has. This fucking song is full of hatred and despair and its conveyed absolutely perfect!
Next up is Hyunnga is a tangled story part 2 and this one almost serves as aftermath to the fields of death and ruin layed to waste by the tragedies of war and mass genocide, with a soft mournful keyboard playing, and sound effects of fire burning along with the artists soft spoken wails of torment and agony playing alongside it all. This is a very incredible atmosphere going on here as well and will leave you absolutely breathless and jaw dropped. Most of this album is extremely harsh and abrasive but it does contain beautiful moments of mournful keyboard passages and softer spoken wails of torment which I think add a lot to the records overall effect and longevity.
Next we hyungga is a tangled story part 3. This one opens with a really dark ominous mournful keyboard passage once again and then breaks into some very simplistic drumming behind the mournful keyboard melodies underneath the black metal rasping coming forth from the man who calls himself PYHA. No name, no biography nothing… It’s almost as if this album was meant to be buried in the sands of korea and only just randomly discovered because that is definitely what the record sounds like. This track is so thick with mournful depressing atmosphere that you can feel the sorrow of a country without hope and without life.. Torn asunder by the tragedies and genocide of a war hungry south Korean military whos only aim is to fight and cause death. Pyha is definitely not something you will be able to handle if you don’t like depressive music.
I know there are a plethora of “DSBM” bands out there and I have a lot of love for these artists, but nothing in my collection is quite like PYHA.
