Alright so the album opens with the title track “Serpent Sermon” that opens with some really ominous ritualistic drumming on the toms by Lard Broddeson and they echo like your about to embark on some epic ancient war.. theres also some sick dark ambience in the background before the song explodes and kicks in with Morgan playing some ice cold chilling riffs and it blasts away with Lars unleashing like a fucking madman. Double bass just smashes your skull in on this one as well. Riffs paint emotions of pure darkness and ice cold blizzard frost bitten winds. Mortuus vocals sound even colder and bleaker than ever and his shrieks combined with his lower hissing style is perfect! Lyrics and emotions on this one are alluding to blasphemy and embracing “the serpent of satan” and all of its cruel deeds of the flesh. Marduk have always been about blasphemy and sin which is one of the things that has always appealed to me about them. Never compromising on their message and goal with their particular brand of black metal this album is no different. The riffing is also quite emotional and melancholic in places which provide a very cold bleak atmosphere but also one that gives visions of what a sermon of serpents would sound like! An absolute killer track with Serpent Sermon guys! This is black metal at its highest caliber and Marduk have certainly delivered on this album!
Next up is Messianic Pestilence and again this one just opens with that trademark marduk brutality but it also has some amazing melody to it as well and the blasting and double bass on this one by Lars is just insane. But it also has him doing some really interesting almost train like beats in places as well. Guitars are played with blistering speed on this one that wail over the crescendo of crushing bass lines from Devo and Mortuus sounds like a Wraith of plague raining down death on everything he sees in front of him and you can certainly feel these emotions of disgust and deep seated hatred and contempt for Catholicism on this track as well as it paints emotional pictures of the pestilent penchant for the Christian messiah and off of the hypocrisy and bullshit of the Christian faith. An absolute blasting banger of brutality and ice cold riffing and savage beastiary. Perfect song!
Next up is Souls For Belial and my god this one opens Mortuus’ ice cold spoken vocal passage into a cacaphonic insane explosion of cold blasting tremolo riffing and absolute insane blasting from Lars and Devo thundering underneath like a fucking storm from hell. All while mortuus spits black metal bile and hatred and sin into the microphone. In my opinion Mortuus is far better than legion ever was and I know im going to get people disagreeing with me but I think this new era of marduk is far better than old marduk. Now that’s not to say that I don’t love old marduk as well because I do. But this new sound marduk have developed has kept both that old school trademark blasting but also added a lot of ice cold black metal melody that really builds a cold desolate atmosphere! Souls for belial really paints emotions of cold despair, torture and death and also an encounter with what the events of belial coming into existence would ultimately be like! Blasting, furious, cold and fucking maniacal is Souls For Belial and definitely one that will have you headbanging and pounding away with fury! An absolute classic on Serpent Sermon here guys! Next we have “Into the second death” and this one sounds like a continuation of Souls For Belial almost like this track is the second half of the events that souls for belial touched on. Frantic fast double bass and devo’s bass lines pound and shake the ground underneath morgan’s amazing cold melancholic tremolo riffing that drips with atmosphere. Mortuus of course is such a talented vocalist on this as well. He definitely has the trade mark black metal shrieks but adds a deeper growl/bellowing to his vocals which make him really stand out ever since he joined marduk back in 2007 and debuted on ROM 5:12. Into the second death has this death like pounding mid track before exploding back into that double bass skull pounding march of death and chaos.
