I just placed my order for this album as I do not own any OBITUARY yet, but upon listening to this album and many others I figured it was time to get some in my collection right? Alright so the album opens with a really creepy introduction that has a very dark ominous feel and you just know whats coming! The intro breaks into Infected which has a really sick low tuned guitar riff being strummed over and over again with some tom work that is quite interesting. It then breaks into a slow crawl tempo to start it off with a brief lead guitar riff from the great James Murphy! Yes, folks he played with Obituary as well. His guitar work on this track is absolutely amazing. You couple this with of course Trevor Peres on rhythm guitars and you have a match made in hell.

The late great frank Watkins handles the amazing bass lines on this track as well and behind it all is the sonic maniacal drumming of Donald Tardy, His double kicks and tom work are incredible. He blasts away quite a bit on this track as well and it feels like a monument to all things decaying and morbid, The emotions conveyed here are very rotten and desolate with Johns vocals sounding like a rotting corpse howling and gasping for air, James soloing on this track is absolutely mindblowing and leaves you completely breathless.. Lyrics allude to a morbid fascination with the dead and the pain that accompanies decay and rot. Perfect Death Metal track.

That’s one thing I notice about this record is right off the bad there is no thrash influence in OBITUARY’s music. Next up we have BODY BAG and my god, do we need anything more deadly than this? Like really im telling you there is just so much magic in OSDM and at this time Death metal was magical, plain and simple. Back when it wasn’t so much about how brutal you could be but about expressing your inner demons through a deep fascination with death and decay. I mean shit if there was a band who explored this at its deepest its OBITUARY. Now I know people are going to mention Cannibal Corpse and their morbid fascination with death and violence and that is something that certainly cannot be ignored. But there is something about OBITUARY that I have always loved.

Body Bag screams of putrid vile crypts and rotting bodies all while you are surrounded by a cold fog in a coffin! An absolute masterpiece of a damned song here with BODY BAG guys and it just continuously pummels you in the skull for 6 minutes. The guitar riffs are chunky low tuned and meaty and it just feels so godamned passionate. Couple this with Frank’s bass and Donalds insane drumming and again you have 4 insane freaks that new exactly what they wanted to bring to the table with OBITUARY’s Cause of death. I cannot wait to get this album in the mail guys! BODY BAG is definitely one of my favorites on the album… so what the hell, lets check it out right now!!!!

And we are back, well what can be said here? I mean its sick, vile, putrid and brutal. It however also has enough hooks and groove to keep you coming back for more, James’ lead guitar soloing on this track are just devastating as well! But the same can be said for the whole band!! Killer track here as well!

Next up is Chopped In Half and this one opens like a macabre ritual of dismemberment and gore splattered violence. The guitaring and drumming pummel away and invoke visions of horror and fear. Some really sick double bass work once again shines on this track from Donald. Frank’s bass once again destroys and rumbles beneath your feet too. James and Trevor do a hell of a job with the sick fast paced low tuned death metal riffing on this one as well and the hooks and melody really pull you in with their groove. John’s vocals once again sound like the strangulated howls of the dead. There is definitely a morbid atmosphere on this track that really points to a lot of violence and gore. An instant classic as well with this track guys!

Next up is Circle Of Tyrants which is a cover from CELTIC FROST. This one opens with some brutal double bass drumming and some really intricate faster paced riffing. Of course all in that sick rotten drop D tuning that Death Metal became famous for! All 5 of these lunatics pounding away like some kind of dead macabre ritual all over this track with of course James’ lead guitar lighting up the track like a crash of lightning… That’s one of the stand out things on this album is of course James’ lead guitar work. It is absolutely on Fire and it slays like crazy guys!
