Israel has finally launched its long-awaited attack on Iran, targeting nuclear sites, missile factories and senior leaders.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that the attack, codenamed “Operation Rising Lion,” targeted “dozens” of nuclear and military targets, claiming that Iran had enough material to make 15 nuclear bombs within days.

Over 200 Israeli Air Force (IAF) aircraft were involved in the strike. The fighter jets dropped over 330 munitions on some 100 targets in the strikes.

According to the IDF, the IAF destroyed Iranian air defenses in western Iran. Meanwhile, air defense and ballistic missile sites in the center of the country were attacked by commandos of the Mossad spy agency. The agency reportedly built a secret drone base near the capital, Tehran, and smuggled loads of precision-guided weapons into Iranian territories ahead of the attack.

Blasts were reported in the Natanz Nuclear Facility, Iran’s key uranium enrichment facility, as well as in and around the capital, Tehran, where civilian casualties were reported. The extent of the damage dealt to Natanz, which is reported to be around 80 meters deep underground, remains unclear.

Several top Iranian officials were killed in the strikes, including Iran’s military commander Mohammad Bagheri, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps chief Hossein Salami, and head of the Khatam-al Anbiya Central Headquarters, Gholam Ali Rashid.

In addition to the military commanders, six nuclear scientists were reportedly killed, including Fereydoun Abbasi-Davani and Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi.

Ali Shamkhani, a close aide to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who played a key role in nuclear talks with the United States, was also killed in the strikes.

United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio said right after the start of the attack that Israel took “unilateral action against Iran,” stressing that Washington was not involved and warning Iran against targeting American troops.

Netanyahu announced that the attack on Iran was “very successful,” implying that Operation Rising Lion was not yet over.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed that Israel will face a “severe punishment” in response to the attack. The Iranian military also announced that there were “no limits” on their retaliation to Israel after the attack.

The Iranian military launched an attack with some 100 suicide drone right after the Israeli attacks. However, all drones were intercepted by the IAF over Jordan and Syria, reportedly with the help of the U.S.

The Israeli attack was a success on many levels. A proper Iranian response would target Israeli nuclear sites. However, it is still unclear if Tehran wants to go this far. This is without a doubt a make it or break it point for Iran as a nation.
