Charlotte Thomson Iserbyt (October 26, 1930 – February 8, 2022) was an American freelance writer, educational consultant, and whistleblower known for her critiques of the U.S. education system. Born in Brooklyn, New York, she studied business at Dana Hall Preparatory School and Katharine Gibbs College. Iserbyt served as a senior policy advisor in the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Educational Research and Improvement during the Reagan administration, where she exposed a technology initiative, Project BEST, aimed at controlling classroom curricula. She later worked for the U.S. Department of State in South Africa, Belgium, and South Korea, and was a school board member in Camden, Maine, from 1976 to 1979. Iserbyt co-founded the Guardians of Education for Maine and authored The Deliberate Dumbing Down of America (1999), arguing that educational reforms were designed to suppress critical thinking and promote socialist ideologies. Her father and grandfather were Yale graduates and members of the Skull and Bones society, and she married Jan Iserbyt, with whom she had two sons. She passed away in Dresden at age 91.
