Nehemiah Lesson-08: Sanctified in the Truth (Part II)

This Week’s Lesson

We are in Lesson-08 in the series “Rebuilding the Covenant Community” from the book of Nehemiah.
 
This is Volume II of our series: “After the Exile” a study of Ezra-Nehemiah-Esther.
 
The lesson is titled “Sanctified in the Truth – Part II” and our focus passage is Nehemiah 8.
 
Please find your way in your Bible to that passage.

In our previous episode, we began our teaching of Nehemiah 7-8, a study we are calling “Sanctified in the Truth”
 
In that episode, we saw Nehemiah taking the next steps to rebuild the Covenant Community.
 
Nehemiah’s priority task had been completed. There was a wall around Jerusalem that provided security and removed shame from the Jewish Exiles (Neh. 1:1-3).
 
Nehemiah had also dealt with issues of oppression and economic stress and despite the best efforts of some of the Jewish leaders and nobles, the community now had a chance to prosper.
 
Does that mean his work was done? Hardly. As challenging as the wall rebuilding project was, it only dealt with the external circumstances of the people.
 
As the walls and gates and the city of Jerusalem itself needed rebuilding, so too the people needed to be rebuilt spiritually.
 
Nehemiah was focused both on the security of the city but also making sure the proper worship of Yahweh was observed.
 
We also learned that God put it in Nehemiah’s heart to assemble the nobles, the officials, and the other people and register them officially.

In today’s lesson we will conclude our study of Nehemiah 7-8. As we look at Chapter 8 an old friend returns to the stage for this moment.
 
He is our priest and scribe, Ezra the man who had devoted his life to the study, teaching, and application of the Torah (Ezra 7:10).
 
The people need to be sanctified in the truth of God’s Word and there is no one better for the task.
