Operation Highjump, officially known as the United States Navy Antarctic Developments Program, 1946-1947, was a large-scale U.S. Navy expedition to Antarctica organized by Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd. The operation, which ran from August 26, 1946 to February 1947, was aimed at establishing the Antarctic research base Little America IV and carrying out exploration and scientific research. It was the largest and most ambitious exploration of the continent attempted at the time.
