When you Pray Say .... Give us day by day our Daily Bread
Sermon on Luke 11:1-13- Lords Day June 15th, 2025 - Trinity Reformed Church
The Lords Prayer
The order: the word order emphasizes the word bread. The last word is day. What is bread? It's been defined as spiritual bread only. But we are spirit and body and we are to make requests for our physical needs. God is concerned for our needs. Not our greatest need but a need non the less. Our physical needs can preoccupy our minds too much. The first part of the prayer should keep us in proper perspective for the second part of the prayer. He is a Father and He is Holy. Hallowed be your name. Our needs come second to God. Thy Kingdom come.
The bread: Father give us day by day our daily bread. The word daily. epiousios - only found 2x in NT. In 1920s they found this word on a woman's shopping list. This is a prayer that God will supply our needs for the day. Literal bread and all our physical needs.. Father give us our bread. God is always leading our thoughts to go beyond the physical needs and think to our spiritual needs. Manna was a symbol of salvation. Jesus says the problem is men focuses on physical bread and Jesus points to Himself as the true bread that comes from heaven.
The giver: Give us our daily bread. He calls us to trust for us to give us what we need. When we fail to pray we aren't trusting in the Lord. Behind everything it is Gods providential provision.
The day: don't worry about tomorrow. Teaches us to be content with what we have proverbs 30:8-9, rely upon God. Fathers are to lead their family with this prayer.
“Keep deception and lies far from me, Give me neither poverty nor riches; Feed me with the food that is my portion, That I not be full and deny You and say, “Who is the Lord?” Or that I not be in want and steal, And profane the name of my God.”
Proverbs 30:8-9 NASB1995
Luke 11:13 (NKJV) “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will [your] heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
Luke 11:1-4 (NKJV) 1 Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, [that] one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” 2 So He said to them, “When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as [it is] in heaven. 3 Give us day by day our daily bread. 4 And forgive us our sins, For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.”
