Houston, TX - A suspect is dead after being shot by officers in north Houston Saturday afternoon, according to the Houston Police Department.

According to Asst. Chief Menendez-Sierra, officers initially responded to a crash scene on the North Freeway, where two vehicles had been involved in an accident. When officers got there, they were told that a third vehicle, a green SUV, had cut them off, causing both to collide.

The driver of the green SUV reportedly fled the scene.

Because the crash resulted in only minor damage, officers asked the drivers to exit the freeway for safety and continue the investigation near Aldine Ninth Grade School.

A secondary police unit responded to assist and found a green SUV matching the description parked just one block south of the crash scene. Officers approached the vehicle and made contact with a man inside, who appeared to be intoxicated, according to Menendez-Sierra.

Menendez-Sierra said during the encounter, the suspect brandished a pistol while still seated in the vehicle. Officers then discharged their weapons, striking the man. Despite attempts to administer medical aid, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
